Rancho Santa Fe Community Raises Funds for Breast Cancer Research

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Alongside many other clubs and organizations around the country, the women of the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club have stepped up yet another year to do their part.

This month is the 13th annual Breast Cancer Benefit Tournament. The golf tournament is set to take place on October 16th and will raise funds for the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Edith Sanford Cancer Foundation’s mission is “to unlock each woman’s genetic code, advance today’s prevention and treatment, and end breast cancer for future generations.” Established seven years ago by entrepreneur Denny Sanford, the foundation honors the life of Denny’s mother Edith and focuses on genomics research, educating others about a healthy lifestyle, and a community-wide fundraising and donation effort.

Every penny of donations to the foundation is directly invested into research.

The Edith Sanford Cancer Foundation is only one of many organizations that the committee has coordinated to raise funds for. For 13 years, the women of the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club have aimed to support those organizations whose focus is the treatment and/or cure and prevention of breast cancer.

The tournament invites all members of the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club to participate in the event. The day includes golf, lunch, and a cocktail party with hors d’oeuvres, Flowers Chardonnay, and Gen 7 Wine.

The golf tournament will be held in a fun scramble format with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. The participant cost is $125, including lunch, cart, and cocktail party.

The cocktail party will include an auction to raise additional funds. Donors have generously provided a variety of great prizes, including golf for three with retired Major League Baseball baseman and shortstop Mark Gurdzielanek, a $250 bottle of Dewar’s, and a week in Denny Sanford’s 5-bedroom home in Vail. The cocktail party starts at 5 p.m. and will cost $45. All RSF residents and friends are invited.

Of course, the annual golf tournament has not been the only effort in the Rancho Santa Fe community to support the breast cancer cause.

Last year, Ann Romney was chosen as keynote speaker for the “Visions of Success – From Research to Reality” benefit High Tea. The event aimed to raise essential funds to bolster research for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research in San Diego County. As a breast cancer survivor herself, Romney is a health advocate and dedicated supporter of breast cancer research.

Every year, volleyball players at La Costa Canyon High School host a “Dig Pink” match as a fundraiser. Dig Pink night is planned, organized and completely run by the girls, and has raised over $5,000 since its first event.

Said Karlee Fuller, who is now playing volleyball at Yale, “Statistics show that one in every nine women will contract breast cancer sometime in their life. It’s incredible to think that we can help find a cure to this disease by working hard and doing something we love.”

Whether it’s by playing volleyball or participating in a golf tournament complete with cocktail party and a fun auction event, it seems the neighborhood of Rancho Santa Fe continuously finds great ways to give back to the community.
